Trainee librarian talks about the impact of Newnham’s powerful literary history

Eve Lacey, a graduate trainee librarian at Newnham College and self-confessed bookworm, explains why working in a library isn’t all about shushing people in the latest Life at a Cambridge College article.

In the article for the Cambridge News, she said: “I have loved books for as long as I can remember and I have always loved the atmosphere of libraries so I was probably always destined to work in one!

“Newnham College Library is architecturally stunning and it is one of the best-stocked college libraries in Cambridge with a collection of nearly 100,000 volumes and around 20,000 loans a year.

“The library is well-stocked because women’s access to the University Library was restricted until 1923.

“The social history of a place leaves its traces on the book shelves and it is a privilege to work amidst such a powerful literary heritage.”
