Professor Caroline Series made a CBE

Professor Caroline Series was awarded a CBE in the King’s Birthday Honours for services to Mathematics. Professor Series, who studied at Somerville College, Oxford, completed her PhD at Harvard and was a Fellow at Newnham in the late 1970s. She is Professor Emerita of the Mathematics Institute, University of Warwick, and a Fellow of the Royal Society. A pure Mathematician, she specialises in symbolic coding of geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces and, according to the Royal Society, is known for novel contributions to the study of three dimensional hyperbolic manifolds via their fractal limit sets.

In our archives, her research area was noted as “ergodic theory, the application of statistical methods to dynamical systems”. Meanwhile, her interests outside academia were listed as “talking, people and mountains.” Thanks to Frieda Midgley and the London Mathematical Society for the photos above.
