Julia Rampen’s (NC 2008) new novel The Bay, published by Saraband is due out this August but available for preorder from April. The book, which is the recipient of the NorthBound Book Award, is loosely based on the real tragedy that happened in Morecambe Bay.
“The novel is set in a fictional town on the edge of Morecambe Bay, a place I have visited since I was a child, as my grandparents lived there,” Julia told us. “It’s a quiet and beautiful place, but also very dangerous, and 20 years ago it was the backdrop to a real tragedy that exposed many of the exploitative practices at the bottom of the British labour market.
“The novel is my way of getting to grips with these contradictions, as well as exploring the themes of hostile environments, both literal and metaphorical, loneliness, and friendship between generations.”
Julia, who studied history at Newnham, is the Media Director at IMIX, a charity which connects refugees and modern slavery survivors with journalists.
