As one of the main priorities of the Shaping Newnham’s Future Fundraising Campaign, Newnham is currently fundraising to build a £10 million fighting fund to green our estate, including our Champneys buildings, most of which are Victorian – no easy task. By doing so, we are joining the global effort to reduce carbon emissions and safeguard not just our College’s future, but that of our planet.
So far, we have refurbished and renovated Peile, thanks to generous donations from alumna Lynda Martin Alegi (NC 1970) and the Haverstock Charitable Trust, Eva Smith House (16 Grange Road) and, most recently Whitstead. Three of our postgraduate houses have had their gas boilers replaced with air source heat pumps and the insulation improved.
Find out more in this video from our Buildings’ Manager, Andy Kite, and our Domestic Bursar, Wendy Evans, about the recent renovations to Whitstead and how the building has been degasified and improved for generations of Newnhamites to come.
Being more environmentally-friendly and future-proofing our buildings is now integral to everything we do here at Newnham. There are also exciting plans afoot for a new boathouse for Newnham College Boat Club.
Meanwhile, the infrared drone footage pictured above shows heat loss from Eva Smith before and (below) after refurbishment.
