In 1994 Newnham was given a bust of Rosalind Franklin that had originally been commissioned in 1961 by Dr Mair Livingstone. The bust was displayed in the college gardens but removed during the construction of the Dorothy Garrod Building.

A bright winter’s morning in January 2022 was the date for the much-anticipated reinstatement of the bust in the College’s new award-winning courtyard. This required expert technicians and specialist equipment working with a local art handling company.

Later in the spring, once the weather had thawed, a sculpture conservator came to College to give the bust a thorough clean and apply a protective paste wax barrier.

The bust now stands prominently on view beside the Rosalind Franklin building. It is positioned looking out through the College gates and is visible from Sidgwick Avenue.
