Described as ‘possibly the finest woman sculptor in the world’ Dora Gordine was a determined and uncompromising artist. She was the first woman sculptor to have her work acquired by the Tate.
This striking bronze, Carmen, is one of an edition of 6, and was bequeathed to Newnham by the psychologist Dr Norah Margaret Davis (NC 1914), a great friend of the artist. The original plaster figure can be seen at Dorich House Museum in Kingston, the artist’s former studio and home.
